iClickers for Graduate Counseling Students

2010

Dear Members of the Faculty Tech Group,

All of my COUN 230 Theories of Counseling students thank you and I thank you for the generous gift of 35 clickers for Graduate Counseling Students in summer 2010. I had 25 students in COUN 230 in the fall semester and we used the clickers for quizzes almost every week and for opinion surveys a couple times over the term. The students expressed their gratitude that they did not need to buy the clickers, especially given that I am probably the only professor in the program to require them.

I believe that the students actually enjoyed the iclicker quizzes (sometimes, we were frustrated by the few times the clickers did not work – usually due to student error and twice to battery failure). I found that the use of the iclicker quiz allowed me a safe and effective way to assess student learning of each theory that we studied each week and to review material that was not yet understood or retained in the class session when the material was being reviewed. It allowed the students to obtain immediate feedback and to learn from their mistakes. Most of all, I believe that the use of the iclicker quizzes helped to foster greater learning and understanding of the material, in combination with the weekly written assignments: It encouraged students to read and review the assigned reading material and to come to class prepared. I was very impressed with the grades that my students earned and with the knowledge and understanding that they demonstrated through this and other assessment tools that I used.

I plan on using the iclickers again in COUN 252 Advanced Theories and Clinical Applications in the spring (with 25-30 more students) for similar purposes. Thanks again for this grant! It will serve many students to come. If someone wants to use these clickers in Jan Term or over the summer for other purposes, please let me know, as I do not teach and will not use them in Jan or Summer terms.

With appreciation,

Colette Fleuridas
